What is Gomo?
Gomo, from the Vietnamese gõ mõ, the strike of a temple wooden fish, is a meditation app for sitting together without saying a word. You choose a sanctuary, sit down on a cushion and breathe with everyone else who is there at the same moment. There is no chat, no voice and no camera. The only thing you share is the room's rhythm.
In the centre of the screen a soft ring of light grows as you breathe in and settles as you breathe out. The same ring is breathing on every phone in the room, and the wooden fish, bell or singing bowl strikes on the turn of each breath at exactly the same moment for everyone. When someone arrives, their silhouette fades in on a cushion over a second and a half; when they leave, it dissolves into a little drift of incense smoke.
There are seven sanctuaries, each with its own sound and scenery: Bamboo Zen in Vietnam with rain on bamboo leaves and a hollow wooden fish, a Kyoto Zen garden with a bamboo spout knocking on stone, a Chan mountain pavilion in China with pine wind and a distant guzheng, a Himalayan stupa with AUM chanting and 432 Hz singing bowls, a Thai forest monastery in tropical rain, a Korean mountain hermitage with a moktak and a great bell, and a modern nature studio with a binaural drone.
Gomo is a mobile app for iPhone and Android. It works offline as a solo sit and connects quietly to the shared rooms when you're online. Your practice log stays on your phone.

How to play
- 1
Choose a sanctuary
Swipe through the sanctuaries; the one for your region comes first. Tap Sample the soundscape to hear 30 seconds of its rain, wind or water before you go in.
- 2
Find your breath
Pick a breathing pace. Calm is 4 seconds in and 6 seconds out. The ring and the prompt under it (Inhale deeply, Exhale slowly) guide you, so you can keep your eyes soft.
- 3
Sit with the room
Enter silently. The chip at the top shows how many people are sitting with you, and the timer counts your sit. After five seconds without a touch every control fades away.
- 4
Shape the sound
Open Sound to balance the primary rhythm, the nature bed and the harmonic drone, and choose whether strikes follow your breath, a slow 40 BPM or the tradition's own pace.
- 5
Offer and depart
Light an incense stick or strike a peace bell once per sit; others only see it appear by your cushion. When you're done, tap Depart to see how long you sat, then bow and leave.

Tips for higher scores
Put your phone down flat or lean it against something at eye level. The ring is slow enough to follow out of the corner of your eye.
For long sits, turn on Dim. The screen goes almost black while the sound keeps playing, and a tap brings the controls back for a few seconds.
The 2D Eco mode draws flat silhouettes instead of the 3D courtyard and uses the least battery, which is good for a 45-minute sit.
Breath-Synced strikes are the gentlest way in: one strike as you start to breathe in, a softer one as you start to breathe out.
Headphones bring out the binaural drone in the modern studio. On a phone speaker it sounds like a soft hum.
Every few breaths the room hears a bell together. It's a good moment to check your posture and soften your shoulders.
The group sits at 05:00 and 21:30 open and close with three slow bells. Turn on Remind me before group sits to get a quiet notice ten minutes before.
If you lose your connection, nothing breaks: the sit carries on solo and the room fills in again when you're back online.

Questions players ask
Is Gomo free?
Yes. The Vietnam Bamboo Zen and Modern Nature Studio sanctuaries, Calm breathing, both visual modes, Dim, reminders and one offering per sit are free. Other sanctuaries can be unlocked one by one or with the optional Sanctuary Pass.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no profile. Others in the room only see an anonymous silhouette.
Can other people hear or see me?
No. Gomo has no chat, no voice and no camera. Others only see that someone is sitting on a cushion, and an offering when you light one.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Every sound is inside the app. Offline you sit solo with the same breathing ring and strikes; online you join the shared room.
How do all phones breathe together?
The breath follows a shared clock, so every phone in a room starts each inhale and strikes each bell at the same moment without streaming any audio.
What happens when a sanctuary is full?
Each sanctuary holds up to 200 people. When it's full, a second court opens, such as Vietnam Temple Court 2, and newcomers sit there.
Which languages are supported?
English, Vietnamese, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, French and German. It follows your phone's language, and you can change it in Settings.
Is my meditation history shared?
No. Your minutes, sits and streaks are kept only on your phone. There are no public leaderboards.
